Informational Writing

Vocabulary Words

 

1. Your introduction is the first paragraph of your essay.

2. A hook is the first sentence or two of your essay that grabs the readers’ attention.

3. Background information includes an overview or outline of the key points in the essay.

4. A thesis statement is one sentence that clearly states the main point you will make in the essay.

5. Body paragraphs include three or more well-developed paragraphs that explain the thesis.

6. Body paragraphs can be organized chronologically, logically, and by importance.

7. A topic sentence is one sentence in each paragraph that states the main

idea of the paragraph.

8. Supporting details include examples, facts, statistics, definitions, or quotations that explain or illustrate the main idea of a paragraph.

9. Be sure to include a list of sources and citations when using direct quotations and paraphrasing in your essay.

10. Your conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay.

11. Transitions are phrases or words used to connect one idea to the next.

Narrative Writing

Vocabulary Words

 

narrative writing-a type of writing that tells a storycharacter-A person or animal who takes part in a story.
setting-when and where the story takes place
dialouge-Conversation between two or more characters
sensory details- having to do with the five senses (sound, sight, smell, feel, taste)
sequence- words that signal the order in which events happen (first, last year, consequently, in a second and etc.)
voice- the form or a format through which narrators tell their stories. It is prominent when a writer places himself herself into words and provides a sense that the character is real person, conveying a specific message the writer intends to convey.
narrator- one who tells a story. In a work of fiction the narrator determines the story's point of view. If the narrator is a full participant in the story's action, the narrative is said to be in the first person. 
1st person point-of-view-The point of view where a character is the narrator; uses “I” and “we”

Writing-The students will read Dr. Doolittle and write a narrative in the point of view of Sarah.

Writing: The students will write an introduction using strong or vivid words in a narrative writing piece. I will guide the students through the brainstorming process. They will introduce characters, setting, situation, using details from provided sources, while using descriptions and dialogue. We will also view two examples of vivid language in their Reading, Writing, Workshop book on pages 116-117.

Writing: In writing, students will be engaged in composing an opinion writing piece. I will guide the students through the brainstorming process to: develop convincing arguments in support of the topic, generate reasons to support their opinion, incorporate strong words, transition words, and phrases to connect ideas, and organize their reasons in a manner that has an impact on the reader (weakest to strongest).

Reading: 
The students will continue to read the story for the week and develop arguments if technology is an advantage or disadvantage.

Writing: In writing, students will be engaged in composing a narrative writing piece focusing on character development, setting, problem/situation, dialouge, sensory details, description, events, and solution. The students will understand the steps of the writing process in order to complete the narrative writing piece.

Reading: Students are actively engaged in Unit 1 in their Reading, Writing, Workshop Book. The students need to review their notes in their interactive notebook, complete homework assignments daily, study for upcoming quizzes, read/take four or more quizzes on Accelerated Reader (A.R.) Program, and have 45 mins.-50 mins. on iReady Reading Program per week.
