School and Home Learning Connection: Enhancing Student Learning Through Partnerships

2nd Grade Focus of Learning September 2017

 

 

Language Arts/Reading:  We are focusing on the following skills: Nouns (common and proper), Verbs (action, linking, and helping), Writing Process (Brainstorming, Drafting, Revising, Editing and Final Draft), decoding words with long a, e, i, o and u, summarizing, drawing conclusions, sequencing and predicting when reading a story

You can reinforce leaning at home by:

Read with your child using decodables.

Read with your child 20 minutes per day.

Ask “who, what, when, where why, and how” questions before, during and after reading.

Practice weekly spelling words with your child.

Practice weekly vocabulary words with your child.

 

Mathematics: We are focusing on the following skills: Place Value (hundreds, tens and ones), being able to use standard, word and expanded form (showing the place value of a specific digit within a given number.  For example: 367 = 300 + 60 + 7) when using numbers 1-1,000, Skip Counting by 5s, 10s and 100s to 1,000, Use Greater Than, Less Than and Equal To (comparing two numbers), able to create and analyze picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plot graphs.

Social Studies: We are focusing on the following skills: 

The Creek and Cherokee Indians, James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, Tomochichi, locate Georgia’s regions (Costal Plains, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley and Ridge, Appalachian Plateau), locate Georgia rivers (Chattahoochee, Flint, and Savannah). You can reinforce learning at home by www.ixl.com
