RULE: To multiply a WHOLE NUMBER by a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10,000) count the number of zeros in the power of 10 and then put them behind the whole number.


88 x 10 = 880

99 x 100 = 9900


RULE: To multiply a DECIMAL by a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10,000) move the decimal to the right the same amount of zeros in the power of 10. The product will be a larger value.


8.8 x 10 = 88

9.9 x 100 = 990



RULE 1: To DIVIDE a DECIMAL by a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, 10,000) move the decimal to the LEFT the same amount of zeros in the power of 10. The quotient will be a smaller value.


9.9 ÷ 102   = 0.099

88 ÷ 10   = 8.8


RULE 2: If there is no decimal point for you to move, FIRST put the decimal point after the ONES PLACE.  Then move the decimal the same amount of zeros.

12 ÷ 100

12.  ←

12. ÷ 100 = .12 or 0.12

1,598 ÷ 100

1,598.

1,598. ÷ 100 = 15.98

Notice the patterns above.  The exponent shows how many zeros after the 1 (1000).  The exponent also says how many tens to multiply (10 x 10 x 10)
