January Third Grade News

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 3rd Grade –       

MATH                                                              

In unit 3, your mathematicians will be learning to solve two-step word problems using the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Students will also examine arithmetic patterns involving both addition and multiplication.  Arithmetic patterns are in addition, students will learn to find the area and perimeter of plane figures such as squares, rectangles, and hexagons.  Please check out the math parent letter for concrete examples and for home connection suggestions.

Students should be practicing multiplication facts on a daily basis. When supporting them at home, start with the 2s, 5s and 10s facts to help them take advantage of the math relationships they already know. You can then move to the 3s and 4s... the goal is to know these products without skip-counting!

We will administer multiplication drills twice weekly to assess students’ progress toward mastery. If your student is struggling with learning their multiplication facts, it may be time for some multiplication boot camp!  The website xtramath.com is an excellent resource.

LANGUAGE ARTS

As we enter a new unit, your students are truly reading up a storm! They are choosing those "good fit “books consistently in order to build up their reading confidence and understanding.  In class, students will read on a variety of topics, with a focus on increasing their ability to read aloud with fluency and comprehension. In this unit, third graders will read thoughtfully, discover details, extract meaning in what they read, and read increasingly complex texts. Students will engage in a variety of genres, including fiction and non-fiction texts.

Targeted comprehension skills:

  • Problem and Solution
  • Character, Setting, Plot: Cause and Effect
  • Main Idea and Key Details
  • Sequencing
  • Summarizing text

Be sure to ask your students about their reading at home!

As writers, your students will be deep in the pre-writing/drafting stage of the writing process as students learn to write opinion pieces.

SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES

Your scientist will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and minerals.

Students will learn to….

  • Explain the difference between a rock and a mineral.
  •  Recognize the physical attributes of rocks and minerals using observation (shape, color, texture), measurement, and simple tests (hardness)
  •  Determine how water and wind can change rocks and soil over time using observation and research.

 In social studies, students will examine the beliefs and ideas of Frederick Douglass, Mary McLeod Bethune and Thurgood Marshall, in order to explain why and how they made iconic choices that make them American heroes. Students will understand that individuals, groups, and institutions have an effect on society whether intentional or not. Finally, students will learn about location and its relationship to production, distribution, and consumption and how it affects people in a given area.
